TRACKING FOOD WASTE ACROSS CAMPUS

At Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), waste produced on campus is categorised into two main types: organic waste and inorganic waste. Organic waste at UMK primarily comprises food waste, garden waste, and used cooking oil. Food waste is generated by canteens and cafés, and each operator is fully responsible for managing the waste generated, including 100% collection, treatment, and disposal. Garden waste such as grass clippings and dried leaves is collected by a university-appointed contractor, who ensures full collection and sends the waste to the nearest composting facilities, with some portions disposed of in landfills. Used cooking oil is also collected in full on a weekly basis by an appointed vendor to ensure proper disposal or recycling.
Inorganic waste at UMK mainly consists of paper, plastics, and other office-related materials. Waste generated across the three UMK campuses is managed by appointed waste contractors. The Bachok and Jeli Campuses are serviced by three contractors, while one contractor manages waste at the City Campus. These contractors are responsible for collecting 100% of the inorganic waste produced and transporting it to external facilities for recycling or appropriate treatment, ensuring a structured and systematic waste management process across all campuses
